Evidence-based psychological therapy specialising in trauma, nervous system regulation, and complex emotional health.

Psychological Therapy

Psychotherapy offers a structured space to explore the experiences, patterns, and physiological responses that shape how we think, feel, and relate to others.

Philippa Williams is a Consultant Psychologist specialising in trauma, nervous system regulation, and the complex interaction between psychological experiences and the body. Her work supports individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, relational difficulties, and longstanding patterns that may persist even after previous therapeutic work.

Sessions are available online internationally and in person by arrangement. Where clinically appropriate, therapy may also take place outdoors or alongside animals through nature-based or equine-facilitated approaches.

Whether you are navigating a specific difficulty, working through trauma, or seeking a deeper understanding of your emotional patterns, psychotherapy provides a space for reflection, regulation, and meaningful change.

Options include:

• Online or telephone-based psychotherapy
• In-person sessions (UK, Europe, or Caribbean by arrangement)
• Nature-based psychotherapy
• Equine-facilitated psychotherapy
• Canine-assisted therapy
• TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises)
• Mindfulness-based and somatic psychotherapy

• Structured blocks of 3, 6, or 10 sessions
• Open-ended therapy

The therapeutic process is collaborative and paced according to the individual. Some clients seek brief support around a specific issue, while others work within a longer-term therapeutic relationship.

Psychotherapy in Nature

Alongside online and traditional therapy settings, sessions may also take place outdoors through the Psychotherapy in Nature framework.

Research in environmental psychology and trauma physiology increasingly demonstrates that natural environments influence nervous system regulation, stress recovery, and emotional processing. Exposure to natural landscapes has been shown to reduce physiological stress responses, support emotional regulation, and restore cognitive capacity following periods of overwhelm.

Psychotherapy in Nature explores how therapeutic work can unfold differently outside conventional clinical environments. For some individuals, movement, open space, and sensory engagement with the natural world allow reflection and emotional processing to emerge more naturally than within a traditional therapy room.

This approach can be particularly supportive for individuals working with trauma, anxiety, depression, nervous system dysregulation, and chronic stress.

This work forms part of Philippa Williams' published research on non-traditional therapeutic environments and the development of Psychotherapy in Nature as a clinical framework for psychological practice:
Williams, P. (2022). Psychotherapy in Nature: Alternative frameworks to working in a traditional setting. InTechOpen.

Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy

Equine-facilitated psychotherapy integrates psychological therapy with structured therapeutic interaction with horses.

Horses are highly social mammals with a well-developed limbic system — the part of the brain responsible for emotion, attachment, and relational communication. Because horses communicate primarily through body language and emotional attunement, they are exceptionally responsive to human nervous system states.

Within a therapeutic context, this sensitivity can bring patterns of emotional regulation, relational behaviour, and internal physiological responses into awareness in ways that are often difficult to access through conversation alone.

Sessions focus on awareness, emotional regulation, and relational understanding through guided, ground-based interaction with horses. No riding is involved.

Equine-facilitated psychotherapy can be particularly helpful for individuals working with relational trauma, attachment difficulties, confidence issues, and longstanding emotional patterns.

Philippa Williams has also contributed to the academic literature on equine facilitated psychotherapy, exploring how relational trauma can be addressed through limbic regulation and embodied therapeutic process:

Williams, P. (2018). Working with relational trauma: Limbic restructuring through equine-facilitated psychotherapy. Routledge.

Therapeutic Approach

Philippa works integratively, drawing on a range of evidence-based and experiential approaches including:

• Somatic psychotherapy and nervous system regulation
• TRE® and body-based trauma recovery

• Internal Family Systems

• Systemic, CBT and humanistic psychotherapy
• Psychoeducation
• Nature-connected therapeutic frameworks

Therapy is always paced according to the individual, with attention to both psychological insight and physiological regulation.

Where appropriate, work may focus on grounding, embodiment, and restoring a sense of safety within the nervous system — particularly where trauma or chronic overwhelm are present.

Integrating Clinical Naturopathy & Psychotherapy

For some individuals, psychological experiences are closely connected with physiological symptoms such as digestive disturbance, fatigue, immune dysregulation, chronic pain, or sleep disruption.

In these cases, psychotherapy may be combined with clinical naturopathic care — an integrative approach addressing both emotional and physiological wellbeing.

This work may include psychological therapy alongside natural medicine, homeopathy, nutritional support, and lifestyle interventions designed to support nervous system regulation and overall health.

Clients may begin with a Combined Psychological and Naturopathic Consultation, a comprehensive session exploring both emotional patterns and underlying physiological factors.

If deeper structured work is appropriate, clients may also explore The Chiron Series, a ten-session integrative programme supporting trauma recovery and nervous system regulation.

Reflections from Clients

From the first phone call I found Philippa very welcoming and professional, the first assessment report was extremely detailed, capturing accurately the points discussed. The naturopathic report along with the remedies suggested also seemed totally accurate as to what I have been experiencing. I am keen to start my full sessions along with the remedies suggested with Philippa as after completing previous therapies, I feel I have finally found a therapist and plan that is tailored specifically for me.
